Michael "Mike" Loscavio

Mike retired from the US Navy as a Commander and aviator after twenty years of service that included a tour aboard the carrier USS Intrepid, two tours in Viet Nam, an international assignment with the United Nations Command in Tokyo working with the Japanese Foreign Office and the embassies of Australia, Canada, France, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. His last tour of duty was as project manager for the National Scientific Advisory Group working with US intelligence agencies providing support to the Joint Chiefs of Staff /Strategic Air Command (SAC - Omaha and Washington DC) on strategic nuclear systems, domestic and foreign. At the heart of Mike's successful diplomatic career was always his ability to understand organizational requirements and the qualities of leadership that could ensure organizational success.

Mike began his second career as an Executive Search consultant with Spencer Stuart & Associates in Chicago in 1974. In 1977 he joined Bill Rusher to form a San Francisco-based Executive Search firm that established offices in San Francisco, Palo Alto and Boston serving clients domestically and internationally in financial services, high technology and the nonprofit sector. Mike's interests in community service took him deeply over the years into the work of nonprofits, the nature of their governing boards, their needs for professional leadership, and their work in social services, health, environment, education, and in culture. Mike's work with nonprofit boards culminated in a seminal book, co-authored with Rusher Loscavio partner Bob Kile, Strategic Board Recruitment: The Not-For-Profit Model, an examination of the changes taking place in board development and board building in the nonprofit sector. This book became the principal training guide used by a host of national and California organizations to enhance their volunteer leadership.

In 2004, Mike and his partners recruited Bob Fisher, former Chief Executive Officer of The San Francisco Foundation, President Emeritus of John F. Kennedy University, known nationally as the preeminent Northern California expert on nonprofit leadership, to lead the firm's nonprofit, education and philanthropic practice. Since that time, Mike and Bob have collaborated on nonprofit searches for CEOs and senior staff in arts & culture, associations, education, environment, health care, philanthropy and social services. Now Bob and Mike are providing executive search services exclusively for the nonprofit community and primarily for institution builders as CEOs and Executive Directors.

Mike earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from San Diego State University and his Master's degree in Management from the University of Nebraska. A faculty member in Golden Gate University's Executive MBA program for over 20 years, he was the program's Director in San Francisco from 1994 to 1998. Michael coordinated and led the University's EMBA International Study Tours with businesses and government agencies in Europe, Asia and South America.

Active in the local business and nonprofit communities, Michael has helped some of the Bay Area's foremost organizations establish, expand and strengthen their staffs and boards as well as serving in leadership positions on several boards. Mike has occupied leadership positions with high levels of responsibility and knows what it takes to lead nonprofit organizations. Since every nonprofit is unique, his decades of direct experience as a leader and in executive search are without parallel in finding the right matches for our nonprofit clients.
